Women in Customs: A Career Perspective – Sept 13

The Association of Women in International Trade (WIIT) in collaboration with CT Strategies are pleased to host a brown bag discussion with notable women from the public and private sectors in the field of customs and border management. In an intimate conversation over lunch, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the career paths of these high-profile women, as well as to discuss some of the challenges they’ve faced and lessons learned throughout their careers in the traditionally male-dominated environment of customs.


Christa Brzozowski
Deputy Assistant Secretary, Trade & Transport, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Christa Brzozowski is deputy assistant secretary for trade and transport policy at the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Policy. She handles multiple economic and security policy issues including global supply chain security and resiliency, trade enforcement and facilitation, transportation security, and national security reviews of foreign investment in the U.S.  Brzozowski is also co-chair of the OECD Task Force on Countering Illicit Trade, leading the development of global standards and national policies to address new challenges arising from the growth of e-commerce.

Previously, Brzozowski served as trade counselor to DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson and Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas where she supported efforts to develop the International Trade Data System to streamline and modernize the U.S.’ import and export processes. From 2011 to 2013, she was director for global supply chain security at the National Security Council staff in the White House.


Luisella Basso
Vice President of International Trade and Customs Compliance, Pitney Bowes Global Ecommerce

Luisella Basso is the Vice President of International Trade and Customs Compliance at Pitney Bowes Global Ecommerce.  In this role, she is responsible for the strategic design and operational execution of trade compliance solutions across more than 220 countries and territories, and for creating and managing a comprehensive import and export compliance, duty drawback and classification program.

Ms. Basso has more than 20 years of experience in import/export, international logistics and customs compliance in a variety of industries including luxury market goods, fashion and apparel, electronics and high tech products.  She is a Licensed Customs Broker and a Certified Customs Specialist.

Ms. Basso serves the American Association of Exporters and Importers as the Chair for the International Policy Committee, and as the past co-Chair of the Textile, Apparel and Footwear Committee. She is a former Programing Chair for the Organizational of Women in International Trade, NY Chapter, and former adjunct professor of International Trade at Baruch College in New York.

Ms. Basso was a co-founder of the E-Commerce Coalition; she has collaborated with the Department of Commerce sponsored E-Commerce Innovation Lab and the “Getting to Global” initiative, and has more recently worked on the COAC E-Commerce and FWS Working Groups.
