Our bosses determine almost everything about a job—whether we are successful, whether we are promoted, whether we are happy to come to work, or dread it. Managing the relationship with our supervisors is a critical workplace skill, from dealing with our first boss to handling the board of directors for our organization. Managing upwards is not a power struggle, manipulation, playing office politics, or smooching backsides. It is the ability to analyze the needs, expectations and quirks of your boss and your organization and adapt your behavior to be a successful professional in that environment.

Whether it’s your boss or your board that is driving you crazy, this lunchtime workshop will give you a framework for thinking about how to work in your unique environment, and give you some new tools to manage your boss (or your board) more effectively.

The presenter, Karen James Chopra, LPC, MCC, NCC, is a career counselor and therapist in private practice in Washington, D.C. She specializes in career management and workplace negotiations, helping clients navigate the complex twists and turns that every career experiences. Over her 16 years in private practice, she has worked with hundreds of clients on career exploration, job search and career management issues.

Prior to entering the career counseling field, Karen spent 10 years working for the U.S. Government in the trade policy arena, first at the Department of Commerce and then at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

She received her Masters in Community Counseling for the George Washington University, her Masters of Science in Foreign Service for Georgetown University and her B.A. from the University of Virginia.
